SILVER STUDS / THE STUDS

Lance Reynolds, Will Scarlet, and Gino Lattore formed the Australian rock ’n’ roll revival group Silver Studs in Brisbane in 1975. Lattore had been the lead vocalist in blues band Clydehouse alongside guitarist and future Sherbet member Harvey James. Future international blues artist Will Scarlet was an original member and wrote their first single, ''My Teenage Dream''. He stayed with the band from its inception until just before the recording of ''Happy Days'', playing a key role in their early success. The trio’s act combined singing, dancing, and comedy.

That same year, they signed with Philips and released ''My Teenage Dream'', which failed to chart. In February 1976, they supported UK band The Hollies on their national tour. Scarlet left and was replaced first by Vivien Grayson, then Paul Stevens. Silver Studs’ biggest hit came with their version of ''Happy Days'', the theme from the US TV show, reaching #5 in May 1976. Their follow-up, ''Dance With A Dolly'', hit #17 in September, and their debut album 'Happy Days' sold 50,000 copies.

In early 1977, Stevens left to join Ol’ 55, performing as Mike Raffone. Reynolds and Lattore carried on as a duo, rebranding as The Studs and adding a new backing band. Their debut single ''Funky Feet'' reached #20 in June 1977. They recorded an album that was shelved until November 1978, released as 'The New Studs Album', which produced two more singles: ''Today I Met The Girl I’m Gonna Marry'' and ''Dr Bop''.  Gino Lattore died in 1990.

  1. It would be of an interesting note to mention that International blues recording artist Will Scarlet was an original member of the Silver Studs and in fact wrote their first single My Teenage Queen. Will was with the Studs from its earliest conception right up to, the and just before, the recording of Happy Days. Will was an integral part of the success of the Silver Studs and should not be forgotten for his contribution in paving the way for them.

    1. I remember the Silver Studs. Will Scarlet really stood out from the rest of them he had real attitude and was believable and still carries that same attitude in his shows to-day.
