BOOKA HYLAND

John (Booka) Hyland was one of those performers who stumbled into show business by chance. With no prior professional experience, he was asked to sing—an attempt that ended in embarrassing failure. But the experience sparked his interest, and he dedicated himself to learning the craft of singing. Before long, he caught the attention of Johnny O’Keefe and began his journey. In 1959, he won a talent quest at the Belmore Police Boys’ Club, then appeared on Sydney-based TV programs like Teen Time and Six O’Clock Rock. His debut single, ''Sweet Thing'', was released on the Lee Gordon label in 1960, selling well enough to chart. He followed up with ''We’ve Got Something Going / The Right Time'' (1960) and ''Transistor / Is It Me'' (1961), and also put out a four-track EP, 'Booka at the Police Boys Club'. He served as lead singer for The Leedons and later for The Chessmen (not to be confused with Johnny Chester’s backing band).

    3. Some details on original versions.

      "Transistor": originally by Armando

      "Sweet Thing": probably first by Grady Chapman, but his & Booka's came out around the same time, and the US writers had Aussie connections through JO'K. A close one to call.
