THE ONYAS

Punk rock band The Onyas were formed in 1991 in Brisbane with John McKeering on vocals and guitar, Anton Bladwell on guitar, bass player Richard Stanley and drummer Jordan Stanley. Bladwell left before their debut EP 'Beergut' hit the streets in 1994. The Onyas' showcased their drunken set of raw rock 'n' roll on top of an added noise of heavy guitars and belligerent attitude. In support of their first single, the band embarked on a messy tour of Europe in 1995 that resulted in a number of empty gigs as well as three different drummers -two of which who couldn't speak English.

Upon their return they released their first full length 'Get Shitfaced With The Onyas' in 1997 on Au-Go-Go Records. Their follow-up album 'Six' came out a year later on the same label. On 19 October 1996 they supported the Sex Pistols on their Filthy Lucre Tour, at the Festival Hall in Melbourne. They made more international tours to Europe and then on to the United States (1997 and 2000). In 2006 John McKeering also joined Melbourne band Cosmic Psychos on guitar, after the death of Robert John "Rocket" Watts. In 2016 the band celebrated its 25-year anniversary with a concert on 1 April at The Tote, Melbourne.
