THE PROBE

 

The Probe were a Brisbane beat group active during the mid-1960s, part of the vibrant network of local bands that played dances, community halls, and youth venues throughout southeast Queensland. In 1966 the band undertook a southern tour that included appearances on the Gold Coast. Guitarist Harry Hambleton had previously played with local group Richard Wright and The Vikings, whose 1965 recording of ''Hey Baby'' remains well regarded among collectors of Queensland beat music. The Probe recorded two singles, although an earlier HMV release was reportedly never issued commercially. One of the band's known recordings is ''I Can Never Win'', credited to vocalist Errol Samin, which has since appeared on Australian 1960s compilation releases. The band appears to have been relatively short-lived. Following its breakup, Harry Hambleton returned to a re-formed version of The Vikings, while Errol Samin went on to establish Madison Kat, a Queensland blues and party band that enjoyed a long career on the state's live music circuit. Both key figures have since passed away. Harry Hambleton died from cancer in 2012, and Errol Samin died in 2024, leaving behind a legacy connected to Queensland's pioneering rock and beat era.
