Adelaide band John E Broome and The Handels so impressed Ken Pitt (who was the manager for both Manfred Mann and the Animals) that in 1965, they were summoned to London to play a season at the famous Marquee Club. Three of the members (Kevin Peek, Alan Tarney and Trevor Spencer) returned to Australia and formed the James Taylor Move in early 1967 when a Adelaide discotheque-owner wanted a house band. They also brought back Marshall amps from the UK being the first Australian group to use them. Adding Robert John Taylor from Sydney on lead vocals they won the South Australian finals of the Hoadley's Battle of the Sounds and in July they travelled to Melbourne to compete in the national final and although they were defeated by The Groop they decided to remain there.
In August 1967 James Taylor Move issued their debut single, "Magic Eyes'' which peaked at #33 on the Go-Set National Top 40 Singles Chart. According to Ian McFarlane, Australian rock music historian, the "Hendrix-derived 'And I Heard the Fire Sing' was too much for local radio of the day, but programmers flipped the single over to reveal the more radio-friendly psychedelic pop of 'Magic Eyes'". The group followed with a second single, "Baby Jane / Still I Can Go On"", in October that year. The band was extremely popular on the Melbourne scene appearing at all the major venues.
In May 1968 Peek returned to England to continue his classical studies on guitar and was replaced by Lance Dixon on organ and saxophone (ex-Rockwell T. James and the Rhythm Aces). The next month Taylor left to commence a solo career and Wendy Saddington (ex-Revolution) joined on lead vocals and John Pugh on guitar (ex-Roadrunners, Delta Set, Eighteenth Century Quartet, Cam-Pact) was added. This second line-up lasted only a few more months and made no commercial recordings before their split at the end of 1968.
