MAPLE LACE


Maple Lace were a Sydney based band that formed in 1968 with Ross Lalor (ex-Five Faces, Soul Generation) on guitar, Paul Mumford (ex-Soul Generation) on bass, Keith Camp on keyboards, Geoff Kauter on guitar, Andrew Marshall and Ken Teasdell on vocals and John Newth (ex-Soul Generation) on drums. Irene Snell also had a brief stay on vocals replacing Marshall. In early 1970 Ken Teasdell left the band and vocalists Gerry Anderson and George Blanche joined in 1970.

The band's repertoire included their versions of songs by Credence Clearwater Revival, The Beatles, Small Faces, Rolling Stones, Blood Sweat and Tears, Wilson Pickett, Sly and the Family Stone etc. and the always requested, Barry Ryan's ''Eloise''. Maple Lace were NSW State finalists in the 1969 Hoadley's National Battle of the Sounds held 17th July 1969. They released two singles the most popular being the Pipkins cover “Gimme Dat Ding” in 1970.

After that single was released, the band went through many lineup changes. Ross Lalor left and was replaced by Rob Toth (ex- Samael Lilith). John Newth was replaced by Mike Derey (ex- Retaliation) Then over the next month, Paul Mumford (bass) and Geoff Kauter left also. Paul and Geoff were replaced by Doug Rea (ex- Sherbert) and Lindsay Askew (ex-Flake). Shortly after Lindsay and Mike left and were replaced by Alan Jones and Ginger Dixon. Maple Lace were a well-known band and played at the popular gigs around Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle and regional NSW. They also toured Brisbane and the Gold Coast. They disbanded in 1971.
