SUPER K

Before becoming part of the early Hoodoo Gurus lineup that resulted in the band's first series of worldwide hit singles, bass player Clyde Bramley and guitarist Brad Shepherd played together not only in the Hitmen, but also shared a brief musical venture in a Sixties bubblegum (or maybe better said, psychedelic bubblegum) tribute band put together as a side project called Super K.

Both Bramley and Shepherd already had noteworthy musical resumes behind them up to that point besides their respective stints with the Hitmen - Bramley in the Other Side, Minuteman, and the much lauded The New Christs, and Shepherd's native Brisbane ventures with The 31st, the Aliens, and the legendary Fun Things. Super K played a few shows around Sydney in 1982, covering material that had enjoyed its heyday on 45 RPM in the late Sixties and early Seventies - bands such as The 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Archies, Ohio Express,American Breed, and the Lemon Pipers. The band name was a tip of the hat to American production team and bubblegum purveyors Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, who had operated during their reign under the Super K moniker.

The one and only Super K single, ''Go Go / Recurring Nightmare'', was released on the Green label in 1982 produced by Rob Younger. The single was reissued on the Citadel label in 1986 but by then they had long been disbanded. Both issues of the single are rare and hard to find, though the Citadel release can be found at times in used/rare record specialty shopping venues. The original release is much more difficult to find. By the autumn of 1982, Bramley and Shepherd were firmly ensconced in the Hoodoo Gurus lineup that would soon make a global splash with their first album release in 1984, and Super K became a band of Sydney past. Frank Brunetti would form Died Pretty.
