THE IN - SECT

The members of The In-Sect first came together in 1961 as a showband playing various popular styles on the Adelaide dance circuit and eventually releasing one pop single as Dave Thunders and The Macmen. When the single proved unsuccessful the band soon changed their name to emphasize the tougher element to their music. The bands lineup at this time was Frank Sebastyan (vocals), Phil Wooding (guitar), John Bywaters (bass), Peter Manuel (organ) and Geoff Pretty (drums). Bywaters left the band to join new Adelaide group The Twilights (who would go on and become one of Australia's greatest bands) being replaced by Allan Sands. Signed to the W&G label their first single was recorded in 1966 ''Let This Be A Lesson / Take It Easy''. ''Let This Be a Lesson' was the biggest hit written by local songwriter Simon Paul and given heavy airplay by top 5AD DJ Bob Francis which made it chart well in their hometown. This was followed by ''I Can See My Love / More Than I Can Say'' and ''I Am Waiting / Down And Out''.

The In-Sect were one of the few bands of this era to record an album. Titled 'Insect A Sides' it was the first album recorded by an Adelaide rock band. Released in 1966 the album was a mix of middle of the road, top 40 covers, showband or wild R&B/freakbeat. The band had a six-nights-a-week gig residency for 2 ½ years at the Arkaba Hotel. In 1967 the band released a cracking version of The Yardbirds hit ''Over Under Sideways Down''.

The In-Sect also fostered at the time then unknown DJ John Vincent's recording career by also arranging a contract with W&G. The band backed him on two singles with 'Ow Ya Goin' racing away as a cult smash hit. In the late 60s Phil Wooding departed the band and would join Jeff St.John's Copperwine. Their last record was released on the Gamba label in 1971, ''The Ballad Of Candy App / Window''. Canadian label Ugly Pop re-released ''I Can See My Love/Over Under Sideways Down'' in 2012.
