SOUNDS OF SILENCE

Adelaide band The Sounds of Silence was formed in the mid 60s. They won the Twin Street Music Battle of the Bands (South Australia) competition early in 1967 held at the St Clair Youth Centre at Woodville. In the same year they moved to Melbourne where they recorded two singles, "Running High / Blame Myself" and "Mary's Got a Daisy / We're Here To Love" at Bill Armstrong's studios. Both tracks were written by guitarist Mick Busutill. Notably the second single was financed by entrepreneur Dr Geoffrey Edelston. Before they moved to Melbourne in early 1968 a major split occurred. Bass player Peter Tilbrook was approached by The Masters Apprentices to join their band to replace Gavin Webb and he did so. He was replaced by Joe Barry. His brother lead guitarist Michael Barry replaced Busutill and rhythm guitarist Kevin Glancy and vocalist Trevor Smith came into the band, but they didn't last much longer and split soon after.
