THE AVENGERS

Formed in 1964 by Keith Ryan on lead guitar, Graham ‘Mick’ Monaghan on drums, Graeme Rabnott on rhythm guitar, Garth Austin on bass and Ross ‘Dick’Bentley on vocals, The Avengers built up a strong following on the Brisbane club and discotheque scene in the 60s and rose to become one of the top Queensland bands of the period. The band mainly performed cover versions of the Top 40 hits of the day. A few lineup changes occurred over the years: Roger Jellicoe replaced Keith Ryan in Sept. ’65, Peter Day replaced Garth Austin in late ’66, Don Lebler replaced Graham Monaghan (National Service) in April ’68, John Phelps joined as a keyboard player in July ’68, Julian Jones replaced Ross Bentley in July ’68 and Keith Kerwin replaced Jellicoe/Rabnott in Jan. ’69. Their first record ''Listen, Listen / Just One More Chance'' was released in January 1969.

In 1969 the band were managed by former Twilights vocalist Glenn Shorrock, while his former bandmate Terry Britten wrote The Avengers’ second single, ''Twiddle-E-Dee'' (May 1969). Keith Kerwin left and was replaced by guitarist Roger Hicks (ex-Zoot). The band broke up in September the same year with Don Lebler joining Axiom. By the end of the year, Andy Tait had formed The New Avengers which also included Jeff Black, Bobby Jacobson, Rick Matson and David Briggs. John Bush replaced Briggs on guitar in 1970, but the new line-up was short-lived. Briggs subsequently joined Glenn Shorrock in the Little River Band in 1976.
