Al Styne [Al Weinstein] was born in 1944 in Israel. He came to Melbourne from Tel Aviv in 1953. His singing talents were discovered while attending Bialik Hebrew School where he was asked to perform at shows. At the age of eleven he sang as a soprano at the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation Choir. When he was older he branched out as a pop performer and became a regular artist at the Powerhouse discotheque in the 60s and appeared on In Melbourne Tonight and Kommotion. Styne recorded on the W&G and Festival labels. In 1979 he wrote and recorded 'Do The Jog' which charted nationally and was also released in the USA.

Everybody seemed to be jumping onto the disco bandwagon in the late 1970's.
ReplyDeleteHis real name is "Al Weinstein". His wife was my 1st class teacher at "Matraville P.S" back in 1970. I don't remember much, but he was a very nice fella according to my Mum.
