DUST COLLECTION

Dust Collection formed in 1984 as a party band project with members of some of Adelaide's underground bands. The bands specialty was cover versions of rare songs and flipsides of lesser-known acts from the 1960's and 70's. They recorded one single on the Greasy Pop label, ''10 till 13 O'clock'' backed with ''Green (When She Says)'' and ''The Light''. Dust Collection didn't play very regularly but played lots of party gigs. As a consequence, they didn't practice regularly either but always managed a blistering tight set. They were selected in 1985 to be included on the Sydney station 2JJJFM (now known as ABC's JJJ) 'Cooking with George Mark Too' compilation album with the song ''So Sad Today''. They finished up in 1987. Dust Collection played a handful of shows in the late eighties and only two gigs in the 90's. In 2013 they released a six track mini-album '6 x 5' and singles ''Electricity In Between / Watch The World'' on Walking Bird Records.

  1. I am an expat who was too young to enjoy all decent music. Mind you, I did get exposed to the greatness of Dogs In Space soundtrack at the time of release, but Countdown it mostly was. Australia is a great melting pot for Australian music, but a special mention needs to be for Adelaide. Of course, there was the Angels; step down Dave, and Paul Kelly, commercially, but to get the true meaning of what it's all about, stay away from the commercialism. Then there's Billy & the Redfins, Moonshine Jug & String Band ,F.A.B. & Local &/or General, on SA.FM. SA.FM is now part of the horrid after 5 group, 'austereo network'. Not every name deserves a capital letter and off my soapbox I get. I also remember when 3D Radio was Triple M & presented Metallica & Mortal Sin at Thebarton Theatre. Then there was the Moonshine Jug & String Band at CC Music one time as well & Daryl Braithwaite opening the Virgin Megastore. Then off to fun fun fun fun fun in Dazzleland !

Paul Kelly & the 'not with Dave' Angels are/were fantastic. I had seen the Angels 3X 1988-1990, and both person & band were great. In expressing that, Spy V. Spy supported the Angels one night at Thebarton Theatre & blew the Angels off of the stage...which was no mean feat by any standards, because the Angels rocked each time and were Adelaides. Oh yes, Cold Chisel... completely overated testostronic overkill, with a handful of good songs at best & I shan't digress. However, Jimmy Barnes is an Elizabeth Boy and like him or not, he IS Adelaide's.

It is a shame that Bank Street Records, Verandah Music, the Muses & Andromeda disappeared, but not a shame we all have access to a glorious place called Bandcamp...where you'll find Dust Collection. On a parallel, Gerry Barrett was in Exploding White Mice and not on Bandcamp. However, Big Star Records is alive, well &; I 'think', even owned by David.
Environment retarded my growth in music, including I am now in a better place to enjoy Dust Collection, No Fixed Address, The Garden Path & Exploding White Mice amongst others.

Anyway, whether you do or don't like Cold Chisel, Glenn Shorrock or any of the aforementioned bands/musos, Adelaide has it's own stake in the annals of importance, including a sound that no other city could possibly re produce. Incidentally, Andy MacQueen, Rock In Peace and here endeth this blog post.
