WILDLAND

When we talk about late 80's Australian melodic rock, there are a few 'go to' bands from that era. Think Roxus, Southern Sons/The State, DeMont, BB Steal, Dragon, at a pinch Noiseworks. Guaranteed one name that won't be among them is Sydney based Wildland. There's not a lot out there on this band, they must've been good enough because they landed a 'big fish' deal with CBS Australia, and released their one-off album 'In This Lifetime' back in 1990.

What we do know about the band members: well the rhythm section of were previously in the 1989 version of The Party Boys, a well known Aussie band featuring a who's who of Australian rock n roll, plus invited guests such as The Eagles Joe Walsh, and Status Quo's Alan Lancaster. Singer Noel Zammit and guitarist Jeff Lenham had played in various spin-off bands related to longtime blues/jazz outfit Beachhead, while Keefe West Jnr has played with numerous top international artists as a guitarist. The album, over the last few years as it has become better known among collectors and file share seekers, has been labelled as a poppy AOR set of tunes.

  1. Saw Wildland when they supported Joe Satriani and I was so impressed I bought the album. Shame they didn't last, there are some excellent songs on it.

  3. Was working in radio at the time and spent a fair bit of time interviewing / promoting and playing some of their tracks, was a big fan at the time too.
Wildland were actually put together by Sony music, their label at the time, big $$$ spent on their debut album + promotion.
Sony billed them as the next big thing, the single 'The Sun' was to be their big push, after the first single 'Unit's which saw them feature on countdown at the time.
Lovely bunch of blokes, who worked hard to get themselves established, but it wasn't to be, when critics canned them and many didn't like the idea they hadn't done the hardwork to get their record label deal they ended up with. This resulted in a big push back from critics and many in the industry.
I was doing a lot of record company liaison at the time and remember Sony pushing them like mad.
There was a lot of talk regarding their follow up album, etc.
Then on one visit to Sony in Melbourne I asked how they were doing and the new album progress.
Sony were cold, very cold...they had dumped Wildland, I was told in no uncertain terms that the tracks they had written for the follow up were no good (record company speak of course).
And that was it, their time had come + gone.
A real shame, as they certainly had great potential, Noel had a great vocal talent, Jeff + others great energy when playing live.

I still have a bunch of pics from some of their live shows.
