CHRIS HALL AND THE TORQUAYS

A Sydney combo who played between 1965-70. They were considered one of the cities better bands and veered away from Top 40 material, often choosing to play obscure songs and 'B' sides. They were managed by John Harrigan and were popular at Surf City. They also organised their own dances until their demise. On January 22, 1965, The Torquays took over from The Missing Links, who were sacked by promoter Harry M. Miller the night before the Rolling Stones and Roy Orbison concert. The Easybeats also auditioned for the Sydney show but were turned down. They recorded one single on the Spin label, ''Don't Ask Me Why'' produced by Nat Kipner. This track later turned up on compilation albums: 'So You Wanna Be A Rock n Roll Star' (Festival 1975) and 'Of Hopes And Dreams And Tombstones' (Big Beat 2002).
