The Four Strangers formed in 1964 in Newcastle. They signed with Asor and released the single, "The Rip / Pearl Diver". Both tracks were instrumentals. The band supported Marty Robbins at the Newcastle City Hall when he toured there in February. The had a a residency at the Orana Hotel Blacksmiths every Friday Saturday and Sunday. The band then signed a recording contract with Festival and released ''You'll Be Mine'' backed by the self-penned ''Sad and Lonely''. The band then played three nights a week at The Belmont Hotel. The band gained a spot on The Under 21 Gala Night of Stars at the Sydney Stadium in July 1965 playing on the same bill with Johnny O’Keefe, Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs, The Easybeats, Little Pattie, The Atlantics and more. Late that year they changed their name to the Sunsets. They eventually evolved into Tamam Shud, a legendary concert band that epitomised underground hippie culture.
