THE SHOUT BROTHERS / SHOUTIES
Made up of brothers Bernie Hayes (Falling Joys, Club Hoy), Pat Hayes (Falling Joys), Anthony Hayes, better known as Stevie Plunder (The Plunderers, The Whitlams), and drummer Pete Velzen (Falling Joys, Plunderers), the Shout Brothers, or the Shouties, were famous for their long-running Sunday evening gigs at Newtown’s Sandringham Hotel (“The Sando”), a tradition they kept from late 1987 to January 1996, rarely taking more than an eight-week break. In 1994, they released their first album, 'Colossus', featuring guest musicians Kathryn Brownhill on violin (Whopping Big Naughty, Gadflys), Tim Freedman on keyboards (The Whitlams), and Peter Kelly on trumpet. Their second album, 'Indelible', came out in 1996, but that same year, the band’s streak was tragically cut short by Stevie Plunder’s suicide. After a hiatus, during which the Sando underwent a profit-focused revamp in late 1998, the Shout Brothers played occasional gigs again, joined by another Hayes brother, Justin, and various drummers stepping in for original member Pete Velzen.
