After rock band Zoot broke up in May 1971, Beeb Birtles and Daryl Cotton performed together as an eponymous pop, soft rock duo, Daryl and Beeb, which were renamed as Frieze for their sponsors – a clothing company. In September they issued a cover version of the Mann-Weil track, "Feelings", on Sparmac Records. In March 1972, the Cotton-penned single, "Try Yourself", was issued under the name, Darryl and Beeb Frieze.
In May they followed with their debut album, 1972 B. C., on Warner Brothers. The backing was provided by Charlie Gould and Phil Manning on guitars, Barry Sullivan on bass, Ray Arnott on drums, Graham Lyall on flute/sax and Brian Cadd on keyboards. Cadd was also the producer. By June, Frieze had disbanded, and Cotton issued "Why Do Little Kids Have to Die", from '1972 B. C.' as his debut solo single. Beeb Birtles would join Mississippi who would evolve into the Little River Band.
