KEVIN SHEGOG

Kevin Joseph Shegog (born 20 August 1933 at Lower Turner Marsh near Launceston, Tasmania) was an Australian country music singer. At age 8 his sister gave handed him down a four-string tenor guitar and the following year got a full-sized instrument. By the time he was 10 he was performing at dances and over the next few years performed at many venues around the district, including the National Theatre in Launceston, where he sang mainly Tex Morton, Buddy Williams and Hank Snow material. Kevin married and moved to Melbourne and then to Shepparton where he worked at various jobs around the district. He performed at local dances and on 3SR Shepparton “Harmony Trail” with a group called The Goldtoppers.

He had started writing his own material, but it wasn’t until he saw a play about Ned Kelly that he wrote his famous song ''The Little Kangaroo''. He is perhaps most well-known for his cover of Claude King's hit ''Wolverton Mountain'' which reached #19 on the national charts. He released many singles and albums in his career, mostly on the W&G label. A lot of his singles were released in NZ. ''Fall Out Shelter'' was released in the USA. ''Wayward Rambler'' was released in Canada and ''Wolverton Mountain'' in South Africa. In 1983, Shegog was inducted into the Australian Country Music 'Hands of Fame' cornerstone. Shegog died on 9 November 2000 at the age of 67 from complications of a stroke he suffered 7 years earlier.
