Noeleen Batley was born in Sydney on Christmas Day, 1943, and started singing at the age of five with her mother’s encouragement. As a child, she performed on radio shows like 2UE’s Youth Parade, 2UW’s Amateur Hour, and the ABC’s Rockville Junction. She entered many talent competitions, eventually winning her first recording contract with Festival Records in 1960 as a prize in a singing contest. Her debut record, ''Starry Eyed'', released on the Rex label in February 1960, wasn’t a hit, but her next release that September, ''Barefoot Boy'' by 16-year-old Helene Grover, became a huge success, charting in all mainland Australian capitals and staying on the charts for sixteen weeks.
This made Batley the first Australian female pop singer with a national hit, leading to appearances on TV shows like Youth Show, Bandstand, and Six O’Clock Rock. In 1961, she was voted Australia’s Top Female Singer and toured with Jimmie Rodgers and The Everly Brothers. Managed by her mother, she toured New Zealand in 1964, continued recording with Festival until 1969, and then toured Europe and England. Settling in England in 1970, she kept performing, releasing her final record, ''Seabird'', on Interfusion in 1972. Batley married in 1975, had a child in 1976, and later lived in Essex, England, before moving to Miami, Florida.
