Deckchairs Overboard was an Australian pop music band based in Sydney which formed in 1982. The early line-up featured Ken Campbell on vocals, guitar, and drums; John Clifforth on vocals, guitar, and keyboards; Paul Hester on drums (later of Split Enz and Crowded House); and Cathy McQuade on bass guitar and vocals. Most of the group's initial members had been in the Melbourne group The Cheks (1980–1982) with the exception of McQuade, who had been a member of The Ears.
Deckchairs Overboard released their first single on the Regular label "That's The Way" (1983) which peaked at #86 with Ken Campbell on vocals. Michael Hoste, an ex-member of Flowers and Icehouse played keyboards with the group in 1983. Hester left the band and joined Split Enz and was replaced by Mathew Wenban before the recording of their second single ''Shout", (1983) with Cathy McQuade on vocals. Wenban departed and was replaced by Michael Davis for their third single "Walking in the Dark". "Fight For Love" followed with Clifforth on vocals and received airplay on TV and radio.

The band performed hundreds of shows all over Australia from beer barns in Bowen QLD to stadiums in Perth. McQuade and Clifforth were involved in ABC's TV series Sweet and Sour (1984) supplying the singing voice for two of the lead actors, McQuade also provided bass guitar; Deckchairs Overboard also performed "That's the Way" for the soundtrack. The film I Can't Get Started (1985), starring John Waters had two Deckchairs Overboard tracks, "Mixed Low" and "Legion", on its soundtrack. With various lineups John Clifforth and Cathy McQuade recorded their self-titled debut album in 1985 after signing with WEA International. The album was produced by Mark Opitz and Martin Armiger and peaked at #88. They disbanded in the same year.

Paul Maheno (a kiwi) lived downstairs from me in Bronte Beach during this period with one of his flatmates being Reg Prasaad (of Doug Mulray fame). Flat was full of characters, some visiting some staying. Paul was a truly upbeat bloke. I don't know what he did afterwards.
