THE TIMES

In 1963 former members of popular Perth band The Hi-Five, Tony Tyler and Jim Sheridan left the state to conduct a tour of the UK. On return they convinced Terry Walker (ex-Ray Hoff and The Offbeats) to join them and form a band naming themselves The Times. In the liner notes for the Clarion compilation retrospective album, 'Clarion Call', Alex Palao writes that the Times are described as ''Perth’s first true beat group''. Clarion released their first single ''Glad Not Sad'' in 1965. It reached #6 in Perth and #69 nationally. Palao provided this musical history for the group: ''Despite a vaguely moptop image, the trio’s initial recordings such as their rare debut EP 'The Sound Of Our Times' had a skiffle, almost rockabilly feel''.

Big on the local scene they also traveled over to the east coast and did some gigs in Sydney. The Times toured South Africa for three months and some of the locals thought they were The Beatles because of their haircuts. Terry Walker ended up moving to the east coast joining The Strangers in Feb 1967. He was replaced by Allan Trosser and Reg Carson. The band would later expand to as many as five members at one time becoming a rock cabaret orientated group. They continued on in the 70s with a few lineup changes. Reg Carson died in 2018.
