From Ipswich, Sharon Black was a regular performer on Bandstand. Before Black started singing, she was an apprentice hairdresser. After much coaxing from her friends, she entered a local singing competition and won. In 1963 she was asked to join a band and they performed on weekends at the Gold Coast. In 1964 she won a competition called Starflight International, defeating the likes of Janice Slater. Her prize was a recording contract with Mercury Records. She left for New York in Feb 65 and cut two singles: "Mother Dear You've Got A Silly Daughter" (was an answer song to Herman's Hermits "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter) and ''Little Church Around The Corner''. Both these singles were released in the USA. Her last single ''Someday Soon/ I Need You'' was recorded on the ATA label in 1969. Tragically Sharon Black died in a car accident in 1979.
