Margaret Hooper, born in 1939, grew up in Blackheath, New South Wales. Her musical journey began at an early age when, at just two years old, her mother stood her on a soapbox so she could reach the microphone for her first radio appearance. From those early beginnings, Margaret went on to win numerous talent quests. At the age of 15, she performed ''Mighty Like a Rose'' and ''Ave Maria'' for the world-renowned soprano Gladys Moncrieff, who praised her talent, commenting that she had "a lovely natural voice, nice and even."
Margaret became one of the earliest female pop singers signed by Festival Records for its subsidiary label, Rex Records. During her recording career, she released several singles on the Rex label and later appeared on popular Australian television shows including Bandstand and Six O'Clock Rock. One of her recordings, ''You're Free To Go'', was later included on the compilation album 'Bandstand's Swinging Sweethearts', released in 2000, ensuring her contribution to Australia's early popular music scene continued to be remembered by new audiences.
