WARREN WILLIAMS

Warren Williams, a former child soprano born in 1940, put together one of Australia’s first rock & roll bands, Warren Williams and the Squares, in January 1958, inspired by Bill Haley and His Comets. By April, they were drawing crowds of 600 every Friday night at the Mascot Masonic Hall. Their TV debut came in July 1959 on Six O’Clock Rock, hosted by Johnny O’Keefe, and they soon became regulars on Bandstand and Teen Time. That same year, Williams opened for Fabian on tour. He released his first single, “My Teenage Love / Where My Baby Goes (She Goes With Me),” in December 1959, followed by “Kath-a-Leen / What’s A Happenin’ Baby” in April 1960, but left the Squares by the end of that year.

He put out the single "Lovely, Lovely Habit / Little Girl" on HMV and was voted the sixth most popular artist on Six O'Clock Rock. In 1961, Williams signed with the Leedon label, releasing several singles and EPs. A prolific songwriter, he started his own publishing company, Williams-Conde Music Pty Ltd, with Franz Conde. In 1963, he supported Chubby Checker's Australian tour. By March 1964, Williams had joined the Courtmen, who backed him on "It's Party Time" (later recorded in French by Petula Clark). His popularity began to fade with the wave of Beatlemania sweeping Australia. He turned to performing in clubs and cabaret shows, though CBS picked him up for three singles, none of which charted. He reappeared in the '70s and '80s on the nostalgia circuit, releasing "Long Black Veil / Jimmy Brown the News Boy" (1971) and "I Was There / Just Call Me" (1984), before launching the Williams Family Show with his three sons. Warren Williams died in 1985.
