THE SECOND THOUGHTS

Newcastle group formed in 1965 as The Others. They then found out about some other Others, in particular an Adelaide combo dating from 1962 who were already issuing records under that banner. In 1966 the Newcastle Others changed their minds, then their name – hence The Second Thoughts. The Second Thoughts rarely played south of Sydney, a loss to fans of British beat / R'n'B groups like The Beatles, The Pretty Things, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks whose material The Second Thoughts covered with dedication and spirit.

The Second Thoughts played on stages up and down the coast, and in Newcastle venues that are now but a memory, often buried under apartment blocks and stores, places such as The Cavern Coffee Lounge in Wolfe Street, the Impala Teenscene in Hunter Street, and Shindig Village in Newcomen Street. In 1966 they ventured down to the St.Claire studios located in Hurstville and recorded a cover of Brian Poole And The Tremeloes ''Run Back Home''. The B side, ''The World Keeps Going Round'' was a Kinks song from their 1966 LP, 'The Kink Kontroversy'. The single was produced by Nat Kipner. Rick Pointon was later in Newcastle pop band, Benny and the Jets. In 1981, he and Alan Windon took a country turn, and revived Geoff Mack’s ''I’ve Been Everywhere''.
