THE OTHERS

The story of The Others began on New Year’s Eve 1962, when teenage guitarist Ian Nancarrow gave his first performance as part of a duo with guitarist Terry Radford. By 1963 the pair were performing together, but Nancarrow’s energy, enthusiasm and musical ambitions soon demanded a bigger sound. By 1964, The Others had taken shape. The original line-up featured Ian Nancarrow and Terry Radford on guitars, Bill Clarke on drums, Rodger Wood on bass and Dave Yelland on vocals. Over time, several drummers passed through the ranks, while Jeff Gurr replaced Wood on bass.

From the beginning, The Others were determined to do things differently. While many of their contemporaries followed whatever musical style was fashionable at the time, The Others developed their own distinctive approach to blues and rock. That determination to remain individual, independent and true to their musical vision provided the inspiration for the band’s name. The Others quickly established themselves as a band prepared to stand apart from the Adelaide music scene. Signed to the Leedon label, they released their first single in 1966, a version of Bo Diddley’s ''Dancing Girl'', backed with Nancarrow’s original ''Sharade Blues''.

Recordings by the original Others also included ''Blues With A Feeling'', ''Look Over Yonders Wall'', ''Why Can’t She Be Mine'' and ''Look Through My Window'', reflecting a band deeply rooted in the blues while determined to put its own stamp on the music. The decades that followed brought line-up changes, periods of disbandment and eventual reformations, but the spirit behind The Others endured. For more than 50 years, the band performed around Australia, from cities and country towns to stadiums, pubs, clubs and dives, always driven by the same enthusiasm and passion that inspired its beginnings.

In an industry frequently shaped by commercial trends, The Others remained fiercely committed to their roots and values. Independence, individuality and a belief in doing things their own way have been constants throughout the band's long history. The Others have made more than twenty appearances at major Australian music festivals, including the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival at Byron Bay, Bridgetown Blues Festival in Western Australia, Blues on Broadbeach in Queensland and the Thredbo Blues Festival in the Australian Alps. A significant recognition of the band's contribution came on 21 August 2015, when The Others were inducted into the AMC South Australian Music Hall of Fame.
