BAECASTUFF

Baecastuff – the band’s name a Norfolk word – has long been one of our musical treasures. What has always set them apart is their ability to play and breathe together as one entity; combine that with a line-up of astonishing soloists and you have magic. Formed in 1996 they have carried the torch for tough hard-bop-flavoured jazz like no other.

Saxophonist Rick Robertson, well known for his work with multi award winning and internationally acclaimed band Directions in Groove (Mercury/Verve), leads the ensemble. Phil Slater won the 2002 Music Council of Australia Freedman Foundation Jazz Fellowship and is considered amonst the finest Trumpet players in the world currently attending a Monet trumpet symposium in the States and hanging out with the great Wynton Marsales. Pianist Matt McMahon, possibly the finest jazz pianist in Australia, won the Wangaratta National Jazz Piano Competition in 1999, the Freedman Fellowship and is the musical director with Vince Jones and Band of Five Names.

Alex Hewetson, bass, has a huge list of performance and recording credits to his name including d.i.g, Don Burrows, Vince Jones, Dale Barlow and Savage Garden. Dr Simon Barker is considered to be a Master of Korean Drumming studying for many years in Korea, his dynamic and melodic drumming currently drives some of the finest ensembles in Australia including Scott Tinkler Trio, Band of Five Names, Vince Jones and many more. The percussion chair is filled by Aykho Akhriff who is of Spanish Moroccan origin. An acknowledged master of his art, Aykho brings an exotic energy to the music.

Their debut album 'Big Swell' was released in 1997 with Nick McBride on percussion. McBride left the band before they recorded their second album 'One Hand Clapping'. His replacement was Aykho Ahkrif . A third album 'Out Of This World' was released in 2000. Their last album 'Mutiny Music' came out in 2015.
