THE SPIKES

An Adelaide band that formed in 1983 then disbanded in 1986. The initial lineup was Greg Swanborough on drums, James Tizard on bass and guitar, Ian List on vocals, bass and guitar and Doug Thomas on guitar. In the early ’80s, it seemed that every Australian city had it’s own garage punk rock scene. In Adelaide, The Spikes headed up the local scene with their own brand of the sound and wonderful DIY videos. Signed to the Greasy Pop label they released their first single, ''She's Melting / The Theme From Acid Beach in 1983. A mini album followed in 1985 '6 Sharp Cuts'.

A lineup change occurred with Mick Brown and Jim Selene replacing Tizard and List. A three-track single followed in 1985, '' A Bloody Mess / The Meaning Of Life / Bang Shang A Lang''. Tizard and List returned to the fold when Brown and Selene left the band and they recorded their last single ''River Of Love / Pass Myself'' plus the album 'Colour In A Black Forest'. In August 1986 David Sly reviewed the album in The Advertiser concluding the review with ''It's a potent, throbbing album full of guitar, a big beat and irresistible tunes from one of Adelaide's finest rock 'n' roll outfits''. They had a revival between 1990 and 1991.
