THE TRIBE

The Tribe emerged in the early 80s and consisted of Jan Preston on vocals (former kiwi who had a #1 hit in NZ with her band Coup D’Etat), Phil Whitshire on keyboards, Gary Evans on bass, Minamotu on drums and Guy Le Claire on guitar. Signed to the CBS label their musical output consisted of three singles and one mini-album 'War Cry', but within that tiny catalogue exist some true pop classics. The singles, ''Angel of the Junkheap'', ''Dreams'' and ''Even in Russia'' were lyrically clever and full of hooks, shimmering keyboards and Jan Preston's soaring, flawless vocals. During the bands tenure Phil Whitshire departed for Wah Wah Nee and was replaced by Tex Mahoney from People, Minamotu switched to bass and Chris Potter came in on drums. The Tribe didn't last long enough to put out a long player LP. After the band broke up Jan Preston went on to become a respected blues singer and songwriter and is the winner of 5 ABC Music Awards for her CDs and soundtracks.
