In 1984 Melanie Oxley formed a dance pop band, Sparklers, in Sydney together with Chris Abrahams (ex-Benders) on keyboards; her brother, Peter Oxley on bass guitar; Bill Bilson (ex-The Sunnyboys) on drums; and Mark Walker (ex-Hoi Polloi, Sweet Nothing) on guitar – who was replaced by Gerard Corbern. The Sparklers released their first single ''''Overworking / Baby Baby'' in 1986 on the Phantom label. Corbern departed and was replaced by Colin Bloxham for their next single release. Soon after Abrahams left and he was replaced by Phil Grove. With this lineup The Sparklers recorded an album, 'Persuasion', in October 1988 with Oxley writing all tracks except one co-written with Abrahams. 'Persuasion' was produced by Leszek Karski on Mighty Boys Records before the group disbanded in 1989.
