THE ALAN LEE JAZZ QUARTET / QUINTET

Alan Lee (born 29 July 1936, Melbourne) was a bandleader, vibraphonist, guitarist, and percussionist. He was one of the first Australian jazz musicians to fuse classical music with jazz and to utilize Latin American rhythms in his music. He led several jazz bands in Melbourne and Sydney from the late 1950s through to the 1980s. His recorded a number of albums and EPs on various labels. After this, Lee trained in Kansas, U.S.A., to become a Minister of religion, and after his ordination was posted to Perth, where he spent several years. Eventually returning to Melbourne, his last recording was an album (on the Move label) of the music of John Lewis, with pianist Jo Abbott. Fortunately Lee received some belated recognition after local producer James Pianta curated an album of Lee's back catalogue, "An Australian Jazz Anthology", that was released on the U.K. label, Jazzman, in 2015.Lee died in Melbourne on 7 August 2022, at the age of 86.

  1. Alan was my mum's boyfriend when I was 6-9yrs old. He was wonderful, but he was an alcoholic (he later got dry and became a preacher in Kansas). He was an exceptionally funny, gentle and sensitive man. I used to get taken to the clubs he performed in and the other musicians used to entertain me. I was really sad to learn of his death. I hope he's happy where he is now.
