Toby Jug or Toby Jugg was a short-lived band formed in Sydney by former members of Clapham Junction that had recently disbanded. Jim Willebrant (vocals), Dave Mills (drums) and Bill Mahoney (vocals) added Charlie Wright on organ (ex-Wheelbarrow), John Foley on lead guitar and Warren Barlow on bass. Toby Jug released its 1970 debut single on the Du Monde label with a cover of Amen Corner's ''If Paradise Was Half As Nice''. It reached the Sydney Top 40. The follow up single ''(Waiting For The) Train To Nowhere / Mr. Kokomo Schmoe'' was released in 1971. This single went nowhere, and they disbanded. Dave Mills has since died and Denis Loughlin died in 2019 of cancer.

My brother, Keith Dawes, played bass guitar on this song. We played it at his funeral in 2016

DeleteI went to school with Keith at Narrabeen.
DeleteSorry to hear about your brother, but he never played in the original Toby Jugg as pictured, who recorded this cover of the Amen Corner hit. Warren Barlow was our base. That's me on the top left.
DeleteWow Bill dave Mills was my cousin I last saw him at he's dad's funeral in Wolverhampton around 1989..heard he'd returned to oz...couldn't track him down ..sorry to hear he's passed...take it easy bbill
DeleteHey there - Just a correction if I might; the drummer's name was David Mills, who previously played in Clapham Junction and later in Boots and the Noise Toys. Also the guy second on the left at top was Charlie... something whom I havent seen in years. David died around five years ago of a heart attack in China. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for that...updated
DeleteYes you are correct Mark, Dave was our drummer & before that our drummer in Clapham Junction & before that Derek's Accents who had a record in the charts with Ain't Got No Feeling For You.
DeleteBack row L to R: Bill Mahoney (Vocals), Charlie Wright (Organ) went on to join Harry Young & Sabbath, Warren Barlow (Base),
John Foley (Guitar)
Front L to R Jim Willebrant (Vocals) & Dave Mills R.I.P (Drums)
Jim became a highly sought after & well known artist who is represented in many galleries.
This song is not a true reflection of our style of music. which was a lot harder with influences from Family, Fat Mattress, Wallace Collection & our "bread & butter Who, Move & Small Faces.
Maybe biased but I believe we could have gone a lot further, but it wasn't to be!
There were several versions of Toby Jug in Australia. The first version consisted of Bill Mahoney (ex Clapham Junction), Charlie Wright (ex Wheelbarrow), Jim Willebrandt (ex Daisy Roots), Warren Barlow (ex Soul Supply and The Farm), David Mills (ex Clapham Junction), John Foley (ex Wheelbarrow).
ReplyDeleteThe second version consisted of Denis Loughlin(ex Sherbet and Clapham Junction), Ray Ferguson (ex Stonehenge and Samael Lilith), Ken Murphy (ex The Affair N.Z. ), Warren Barlow (ex Soul Supply and The Farm), John Foley (ex Wheelbarrow). Dave Taylor (ex Soul Supply and The Farm). Dave passed away in the early eighties.
Other versions of Toby Jugg had Garth Porter playing
Thanks for the info
