THE BREAKAWAYS

Formed in 1961 in the Frankston-Mornington Peninsula area of Melbourne, The Breakaways were primarily an instrumental guitar group of a similar genre to The Shadows. The band was made up of lead guitarist Colin Turnbull who emigrated from Scotland with his family and started playing guitar at six. Rhythm guitarist Mike Davenport was born in India where his father Colonel Davenport served there in WWII. Bass player Pat Turpin was born in Canada and drummer and founder of the band, Murray Anderson was the only member born in Australia.

Signed to the W&G label their first release was a cover of Bob Dylan's ''Blowin' In The Wind'' making it one of the very first covers of a Dylan song by an Australian act. Their fourth single, ''The Flipper'' charted and was released in Germany, NZ, South Africa, Malaysia, Canada and the USA. In total the band released six singles and an album, 'Meet The Breakaways'. They also backed Melbourne singer Tony Henry on record. Mike Davenport has since died.

  1. Missing is the Breakaways W&G 45 rpm recording of: A side"I walk the Line",
B side " Dominique". This recording , I believe, climbed to number 1 in Mexico and Canada. Unable to confirm.
