THE RENEGADES
Surf instrumental band that ran a successful dance every Friday night at Collaroy Surf club from 1961 during which practically every Australian singer appeared as a guest artist. The band held the record for the longest running dance date in Sydney. Signed to the RCA label they recorded their only single ''Kahuna / Hot Sands'' in 1963 which was produced by Johnny Devlin. The single made the Top 40. After ''Kahuna'' became quite a successful hit, Van de Voorde, Thompson and Miller decided that they wanted to join a cruise ship playing in the band, but Cowie and Morrison were married and did not want to leave their day jobs. Van de Voorde, Thompson and Miller called their group The Charades and pursued their dream. Signed to the RCA label they released four singles. Cowie and Morrison recruited three new members, Derek Bates on bass, John Twentyman on drums and Paul Schneider on sax and continued playing as The Renegades for a total of about ten years at Collaroy.
