THE BREADMAKERS

The Breadmakers are a Melbourne institution, but are perhaps better known in Japan, Spain and France than they are in some Australian capitals. They formed in 1989 to play early ‘60s-style Louisiana Rhythm & Blues – they take their name from a Slim Harpo track – having individually cut their teeth in ‘60s-styled garage rock bands earlier in the decade. The initial lineup was Gordon Johns [Homesick Gordon] (ex-The Unheard) on guitar, Richard Whelan [Lazy Dik] (ex-The Cracked Jaffers), Nick Phillips [Cadillac Slim] (ex-Putitans) on bass, Scott Lacey [Bootpolish Lacey] (ex-Puritans) on drums, Davern White [Hoodoo White] (ex-Bo Weevils) on guitar and Clive Shepherd [Smokey] on keyboards. They released their first album 'Hoodoo Nightspot' in 1992 on the Corduroy label. During the 90s Johns, White and Shepherd moved on being replaced by Mick Brierley [Blacktop] on guitar, and Cameron Peters [Cajun Spice] on keyboards. The Breadmakers have been playin' their sleazy brand of swingin' Louisiana swamp pop and garage trash around hometown Melbourne, Europe, the States and Japan for over thirty years. The Breadmakers refine their much loved rockin' live sets of originals and long-lost covers. The band has released over half a dozen albums, numerous EPs and singles.
