JAMES GRIFFIN

Jamie Francis "James" Griffin is an Australian singer-songwriter, poet, musician, playwright and broadcaster. His style is rock and country music, his work has been covered by other artists including The Black Sorrows and Lee Kernaghan. Griffin has led bands the Agents (1980–83) and James Griffin and the Subterraneans (1983–88); and released material as a solo artist.

Griffin started his musical career in 1979 with a self-financed four-track extended play, 'I Smoke Money'. To assist him was Peter Countach on guitar of Melbourne punk band X, Daryl McKenzie on drums, Alistair Jones on keyboards from Wasted Daze and Rick Turk (ex-Soffrok) who arranged the strings. He formed a country and rock music group, Agents, in 1980 with Lindy Allen on bass guitar, James McIntyre on keyboards and Robin Walsh on drums and Kydric Shaw on guitar. This line-up less McIntyre released a single, "Suburbs of the Heart" (1980), which Griffin had written. The second line-up saw Allen and Walsh depart replaced by Gye Bennetts (drums) and Karl May (bass). They released the "Merciless Cinema" single in 1981. Further lineup changes included the return of James McIntyre (guitar), Kim Knight (bass) and Dennis Flannery (drums). This lineup released the "Seven Samurai" single and 'No Adjustment To The Face' mini-LP in 1983.

Griffin released a solo EP, 'Panic', in December 1984 with the same members from Agents. Griffin formed The Subterraneans which was intended to have a floating lineup of musicians who did not have other commitments at the time. This band released two albums and a number of singles. In 1991, Griffin played with the Shadow Gang: Peter Harrison (drums), Roger Hart (guitar, vocals) and Rowan McKinnon (bass). As a solo artist he has released the albums,' The Land Of A Thousand Dances' (1987), 'True Love & The Many Meanings Of Invisibility' (1987), 'Black Crow Road' (2003) and 'Singing Songs About The View' (2017).
