Originally called The Shape Sphere, The Shantells were formed in the large farm town of Shepperton in the mid 60s. The original Shantels was formed by Kevin Runciman, (guitar) Tony Colmer (guitar), Ian Ferguson (bass) and Laurie Brown on drums. Over the course of their brief history other lineup changes included, Terry Brown (guitar), Robert Crowe (guitar), Alan McKenzie (vocals/guitar/organ), Ernie ''Tony'' Roach (vocals, keyboards), John Runciman (bass/guitar), Keith Harris (sax). Very popular on the regional scene the band ventured to the big smoke and recorded one single on the Go!! label, a garage rock classic called "On My Mind," during 1965, which charted locally but failed to sell well in Melbourne or other large cities. They appeared on the
Go!! Show a number of times. The group split up later in 1965. Robert Crowe and Kevin Runciman have since died.
