News originally called Flower Power was formed by multi instrumentalist John Pugh (ex-Roadrunners, 18th Century Quartet) in 1967. News recorded a great cover version of Edwin Starr's 1964 hit ''S.O.S. (Stop Her On Sight). Future Air Supply front man Russell Hitchcock provided the backing vocals. The band was into soul, performing a wide repertoire of US hits by black artists. Sax player Lindsay Farr always called the shots but it was John Pugh's vocals, full of meaning and feeling that gave the band its edge. Unfortunately the band was short lived. Pugh went on to become a member of Cam-Pact, James Taylor Move, Healing Force and Ray Burton's band Nightflyers. Chris Lovfen had a brief stint in Cam-Pact before becoming a film maker. He is best known for directing the feature film Oz (1976) and for directing numerous music video clips, including for the Daddy Cool song, "Eagle Rock".Lindsay Farr would turn up in Sydney big band Heart 'n' Soul. John Pugh died in 2025.
