DALE WAYNE AND THE WANDERERS

Pop singer active in the early 1960s. Appeared on Six O’Clock Rock and Teen Time. His original name is unknown as the name ''Dale Wayne'' was assumed when after his first appearance on Six O’Clock Rock, Johnny O’Keefe asked that viewers write in and a suggest a stage name for him. Believed to be of indigenous background.  The backing on Dale Wayne's single was Sydney group The Midnighters. The band members were Tony Curby (piano), Tony Joyce (guitar), Bill McIntyre (bass) and Bill Flemming (drums). They were a rock'n'roll band and are not to be confused with another Sydney group of the same name that played surf music and released singles on the RCA label.

  1. I believe his real name was John Williams. I think he lived in the Seaforth/Balgowlah area in 1960s. I went to school with a friend of his.

    1. I know Tony Curby had a jazz trio around this time. Where did you get your info? Were you in the band? Cheers

    2. I have recently spoken to drummer Bill Flemming who has very good memory of events around this time. He also told me about the jazz trio he played in with Tony Curby and a bass player from Melbourne. They played weddings, parties and other social functions at the Australia Hotel in Castlereagh Street in Sydney.

  7. Bill Flemming and Tony Joyce also played together in The Chessmen (not to be confused with the Melbourne band). They release a couple of singles on EMI circa 1962
