THE TELSTARS

By the age of 17, Ray Burton was already appearing in promoter Lee Gordon’s legendary rock ’n’ roll shows at Sydney Stadium in Rushcutters Bay. In 1961, he joined the Dave Bridge Quartet as rhythm guitarist. After leaving the group, Burton formed the Sydney instrumental band The Telstars with drummer Sunny Pratt, formerly of The Vibratones, guitarist John Thomas and bassist Ken White. Thomas soon moved to Melbourne, where he formed The Flies with Themi Adams and Ronnie Burns, and was replaced in The Telstars by Bob Van Eckeres. The Telstars signed with CBS and, between 1963 and 1964, released five singles, all produced by Sven Libaek. Burton wrote his compositions under his birth name Ray Doughty. The group’s most successful recording was ''Reef Ride'', which reached #1 in Switzerland.
