The band were formed in the mid 60s by the remnants of The Marksmen who played at the now demolished Palais Royal in North Terrace, Adelaide and were often featured in broadcasts by Radio Station 5AD. They appeared weekly in The Teensville Casual Club, playing Beatles style music and often backing visiting artists from interstate.
When lead guitarist Max Pepper left the band, they changed their name to The Southern Gentlemen. Remaining members included Mark Anthony [Ray Dyett], Billy Pfeiffer on bass and Keith Drage on drums. The band released its first single on the Festival label in 1965 ''Leave Myself To Me / Mean, Mean City'' both written by vocalist Craig Roberts. The second single was released on Columbia in 1966, ''A Wondrous Place / I Want You Back Again''. Billy Pfieffer would later turn up in The Vibrants. Keith Drage died in 2011.
